Fourth Floor 2013 Website

Over the last one or two years, I have been working with the hairdressing salon Fourth Floor in London in order to update their website. The idea behind their new updated website was simply just to show a short film that in a sense would celebrate the style and background of the salon, whilst not necessarily focusing on the obvious subject of ‘hairdressing’.

Working with North who have managed to develop a very strong identity for Fourth Floor over many years of working together, the premise for the film was that some scenes would take place in and around the salon whilst others would be filmed in the city of where the products are originally made, in Padova, Italy.

All the shots were filmed and directed by myself. Having started filming in late 2011, the final edited version is finally live online, which you can view here. The music in the background is specifically created by Rob Bagshaw.

I would really appreciate if you could take a look at the film. It’s quite a slow film but only a minute and 52 seconds long so try to hang on till the end if you can. Click here to be directed to the website.

Light Show: Hayward Gallery 30 January - 28 April 2013

The Hayward Gallery is hosting an exhibition starting today under the title ‘Light Show’ which explores how light is used to sculpt and shape space in different ways, showing works that have been created between now and the 1960s.

It will be interesting to see how the gallery curates such an exhibition as each piece of work will be very different to the other with regards to colour and scale, and also what the walkthrough experience will be like. I’ve seen Anthony McCalls light projections before at the Serpentine (the predominantly blue image above) which was really nice so I’d be interested in finding out how McCalls work is shown in the same gallery as the colourful nature of Carlos Cruz-Diez’s work (also shown above).

There are some big names in the exhibition like Dan Flavin, James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, and Olafur Eliasson, amongst others. I’m a big fan of light installations and after viewing the images above, it looks incredible and is definitely on my to-do list.

AGI Open 2012: Identity by Hamlet Auyeung

Some nice work from Hamlet Auyeung in 2012 to promote the AGI Open event in Hong Kong. Each year AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) hold an event hosting some of the world’s best graphic designers. Last year it was based in Hong Kong, the year before in Barcelona. This year it will be held in London for the first time ever in September. This is something truly not to be missed.

Marlborough Contemporary Magazine Adverts: North

Marlborough Contemporary, the newest addition to the Marlborough group of galleries, recently opened above Marlborough Fine Art in London. North created the identity for it and in doing so, produced a series of magazine adverts to promote the opening in October.

This was one of the projects I worked on whilst working at North in the summer of 2012. I helped with adverts for magazines including Artforum, Kaleidoscope, Fantastic Man, Gentlewoman, Frieze d/e, Mousse and Art & Auction. Above are few images of the ad’s in situ.

6x6 Letterpress Project

Brief given to the University of Brighton, Central Saint Martins, Lincoln School of Art and Design, London College of Communication, Glasgow School of Art and Camberwell:

Respond to the immediate 1200-ft radius of the letterpress studio at your University, whilst only using the University’s letterpress facilities.

To answer this brief, I chose to focus on the levels of noise within the specified radius of the university. In doing so, I mapped out a 12x12 grid on Google Maps with the letterpress studio in the middle. Where the horizontal and vertical lines crossed on the grid, I would go to that exact place in Brighton and record the levels of a noise using a decibel meter. There were 144 points on the grid, however I couldn’t visit all of them as some were in private property so I managed to get around 112 recordings altogether. To represent these recordings using letterpress, I chose to print the noisier areas using a heavier amount of ink on the page, and vice versa for the quieter areas.

For this part of the project, I had to produce 10 prints which meant fifty prints altogether as each design included 5 tones. Here are a few images of my first attempt in progress:

After this, three of the projects including mine were chosen to be developed further to be published in a book alongside the work of the other universities’ I mentioned at the beginning of this post. We now had to develop our work and have it printed about 250 times so it could be bound into books. I developed mine by making the difference between the levels of noise more noticeable and finessing the type so it wasn’t so big and bold.

As we could only use black and one other colour, I chose to represent the levels of noise using five different tones of black, therefore doing about 1250 prints through the press in total. Here are a few images of my development:

The finished piece was shown in an exhibition called ‘6x6’ put on during November at the Her House Gallery by Hoxton Square alongside the work of the other 5 students and tutors in total from the University of Brighton and from the other universities too. A few images of the work on the opening night of the exhibition are shown below.

We also spoke about our work at the letterpress conference called ‘Something to Say’ featuring Anthony Burrill and others whilst the exhibition was open to the public. It’s finished now but will be shown again at the University of Brighton from this coming Friday (7th Dec) for a week or so. Come along if you’re around!

Every so often one of my coursemates will do something that I wish I’d done. This is one of those moments. The typeface shown above has been created by fellow designer Ryan Neil by drawing and projecting lines and circles above an isometric grid. The result, along with the accompanying sketches look great together - something you often don’t get to see in published professional work.
